We don't know her musical taste yet, but is seems that this reworking of "At Seventeen" might encapsulate some of her thoughts to date. Click here to hear the tune.

"At Seven Days"
with apologies to Janice Ian

Last week I wasn't even dressed,
when I arrived at Deaconness.
I didn't really have a plan,
I thought I'd just visit Spokane.

And then I met my mom and pa,
and rode with them to Yakima.
They told me that I was the one,
found by attorney Gustafson.

- Refrain -

For those of us with pudgy faces
lacking in the social graces,
the world is big, and I am small
to me my mom even seems tall.
I eat and burp and sleep and smile
and try to pass the time awhile.
I've grown in many ways,
in seven days.

Each day I find out something new
like toes aren't there for me to chew.
It's fun to pull on my dad's specs,
as he laughs at Morro's reflex.

I don't know what tomorrow brings,
so I'll just live for present things.
These people love me, strange and true
though I'm someone so very new.

- Refrain -

For those of us with pudgy faces
lacking in the social graces,
there's much to love and much to fear
but there's one thing that's very clear.
I've got a place in people's hearts
and that's the place where my life starts.
Life's future is a maze,
at seven days.

Thursday, June 7, 2001
Nora had her first "tourist" outing today. She visited the Yakima Arboretum and, if her ocular focal distance was longer than about a foot and a half, would have seen two bunnies. No matter, she can focus on her souvenir postcard of the Arboretum's Japanese garden.

Nora the campesina? Nora needed a checkup today, and since she and her family are itinerants in Yakima no pediatrician seemed willing to accept her for a visit, so the family went to the farm workers' clinic and waited for their turn with the rest of Yakima's newer arrivals.
